Preventative Dentistry
New patient exams & X- rays
During the first visit, we take a full set of digital x-rays for complete evaluation. The process of digitally capturing an image is faster, safer and more comfortable, versus the traditional film x-rays. The dentist will complete a thorough dental examination in order to determine the type of treatment and cleaning that is needed.
We welcome children in our office starting at age 8 years old. We refer children ages 7 and under to see a pediatric dentist.
Children's Cleanings
We welcome children in our office starting six months after the first tooth emerges, or one-year-old, whichever occurs first, as recommended by The American Adademy of Pediatric Dentistry.
The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. This visit gives your child an opportunity to meet the dentist in a non-threatening and friendly way. Some dentists may ask the parent to sit in the dental chair and hold their child during the exam. During the exam, the dentist will check all of your child’s existing teeth for decay, examine your child’s bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues. If indicated, the dentist or hygienist will clean any teeth and assess the need for fluoride. He or she will also educate parents about oral health care basics for children and discuss dental developmental issues and answer any questions.
Cleanings
Depending on the results of your consultation, you may need one of three different types of cleaning: prophylaxis for light debris, a full-mouth debride for harder debris, and scaling and root planning, for those with periodontal bone loss.
Periodontal Cleanings, scaling & Root Planning (Deep Cleaning)
Not everyone qualifies for a normal cleaning. If you have periodontal bone loss or bacterial buildup under your gum line, you’ll need a deeper cleaning in order to keep your teeth healthy. We will be able to decide if this is the best option for you and your teeth, and it’s important to get the procedure done if you need to. The effects of ignoring a periodontal cleaning include mobility of teeth or tooth loss.
Sealants
Sealants are an important cavity preventative, especially during early adolescence, when oral hygiene could be lacking and posterior adult teeth are growing in. It’s strongly recommended by the ADA to get sealants when possible.
