Giving Back: The Education of Dental Care
We believe dental health is important for everyone, no matter their age, or where they live. Poor dental health can make it difficult to chew and eat, causing daily pain and even affect an individual’s overall health. For that reason, we believe in giving back, which is why our very own Clermont dentist, Dr. Shovon Kasem, DMD, participated in the 2019 dental mission trip to Ecuador.
2019 Dental Mission Trip in Ecuador
Our dentist is dedicated in helping those in other countries who have limited access to dental care. One of those places includes the rural communities along the mountains of Ecuador. When he heard about the 2019 dental mission trip, he immediately knew he wanted to participate. It would be the first time he could participate in a dental mission trip as a faculty member of the University of Florida. As a student of the university, he was thrilled to be able to participate in his third dental mission trip. This time, he could be helping the villagers in Ecuador and teaching a group of students about compassion, dental health, and the importance of helping other people.
During the trip, he was able to extract decayed teeth in children and adults, fill cavities, teach the villagers about good oral hygiene, and advise on how to reduce their risks of experiencing more cavities, gum disease, and the need for tooth extractions. Dr. Kasem said it was one of the most memorable experiences of his life. The villagers were thankful and appreciative of the dental healthcare they received and were eager to learn about oral health and how they could keep their teeth clean. Their thanks, appreciation, and gratitude only increased when they realized that the dentists and dental students had spent their personal funds on the trip in order to provide dental health care to the villagers. Our dentist was so inspired that he hopes to be able to attend many more dental mission trips in the near future.
How Your Local Dentist Can Teach You Ways To Get Better Oral Health At Home
Dr. Kasem was inspired after his trip abroad and wanted to continue to share his passion for teaching about oral health when he got home to Clermont, FL. These are our top recommendations for optimal at-home oral care!
When it comes to at-home dental hygiene, we recommend always choosing toothbrushes and kinds of toothpaste that are approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). This helps ensure that the product performs as expected, is safe, and has been properly tested. Once the products have been chosen, children and adults are encouraged to brush their teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and at night, for three minutes, and floss once a day. Individuals can also brush their teeth after each meal and snacks. However, it’s important to wait at least 30 minutes after taking the last bite in order to ensure the increased acid levels in the mouth have subsided.
The second part of maintaining good oral health involves getting professional dental examinations and teeth cleanings every six months. Dental examinations and teeth cleanings help detect tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease at the earliest possible stages where they are most easily treated. If you have cavities or gum disease, our dentist will devise a treatment plan that thoroughly cleans the teeth and gums, including any deep pockets between the teeth and gum tissue, and helps heal any residual infection so that you can keep your natural teeth and have your gum health restored.
